Massimi interpreti dei linguaggi scaturiti dall’utilizzo delle nuove tecnologie, protagonisti di una ricerca che ha saputo spaziare dal mondo del design a quello della riflessione teorica, i Metahaven presentano per la prima volta in Italia le loro ultime creazioni nell’ambito di COMP(H)OST.
Nati come collettivo di “design speculativo”, nel tempo i Metahaven si sono concentrati su come i nostri spazi vengano definiti dal flusso di informazioni e propaganda che, originatosi nel mondo digitale, ha finito per plasmare la realtà concreta della nostra esperienza quotidiana. Nel loro film The Sprawl (Propaganda About Propaganda) viene presentato un ecosistema in cui convivono diverse versioni di quella che chiamiamo “realtà”, e nel quale proliferano talmente tante narrative parallele da ridefinire la nostra nozione di verità. Quale valore assume dunque il concetto di identità in un ambiente saturo di stimoli in reciproca contraddizione, a partire dalla sovrapposizione tra la vecchia retorica degli stati sovrani e la scala globale su cui agisce l’odierno apparato computazionale?
A partire dal loro lavoro nel campo dell’immagine in movimento, i due fondatori di Metahaven, Vinca Kruk e Daniel van der Velden dialogano con Leonardo Dellanoce (Digital Earth), curatore italiano di base ad Amsterdam in un confronto che tocca i temi dell’arte, del cinema, del design, della poesia e della rappresentazione delle astrazioni, nel tentativo di comprendere come, attraverso un immaginario da loro stessi definito “soft sci-fi”, sia possibile decifrare un ambiente in cui natura e cultura coincidono, e in cui sembra diventato impossibile distinguere tra fatti e finzioni, tra passati immaginari e futuri costruiti ad arte.

Leading interpreters of the languages arisen with the use of new technologies, protagonists of a research able to range from the world of art and design to theoretical thinking, Metahaven present for the first time in Italy their latest works in the framework of COMP(H)OST
Founded as a speculative design collective, Metahaven have over time focused on how our spaces are defined by the flow of information and propaganda that, having originated in the digital world, has ended up shaping the concrete reality of our daily experience. Metahaven’s 2015 film The Sprawl (Propaganda About Propaganda) presented an ecosystem in which different versions of what we call “reality” coexist, and in which so many parallel narratives proliferate that our notion of truth is redefined. So what value does the concept of identity acquire in an environment saturated with mutually contradicting stimuli, starting from the overlap between the old rhetoric of sovereign states and the global scale on which today’s computational apparatus acts?
Starting from their work in the field of moving image, the two founders of Metahaven Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden talk with Leonardo Dellanoce (Digital Earth), an Italian curator based in Amsterdam,about their most recent works, touching upon art, cinema, design, poetry, and the representation of abstraction(s), in an attempt to understand how, through an imaginary defined by them as “soft sci-fi”, it is possible to decipher an environment in which nature and culture coincide, and in which it seems to have become impossible to distinguish between facts and fiction, between imaginary pasts and artfully constructed futures.
