Tra le personalità di maggiore spicco del pensiero contemporaneo, la filosofa e psicologa belga Vinciane Despret presenta per la prima volta in Italia le sue più recenti ricerche, a pochi giorni dalla pubblicazione del suo ultimo libro Habiter en oiseau (Actes Sud).
Vicina ad autori come Isabelle Stengers e Bruno Latour, Despret ha incentrato le proprie riflessioni sul rapporto con la scienza, sul mondo degli animali e la relazione tra psicologia umana ed etologia, attraverso la quale esplora “le conseguenze politiche delle nostre scelte teoriche”.
La lectio magistralis per COMP(H)OST, presenta le sue più recenti ricerche sul tema del : “In molti testi troviamo l’idea che noi umani saremmo ‘istintivamente territoriali’- dice Despret. È forse questo istinto, ereditato dai nostri antenati animali, a poter spiegare la nostra idea di proprietà privata, territorio, frontiera e infine di nazione? Ciò significherebbe dimenticare che questi concetti sono recenti e storicamente situati. Fare degli animali dei piccoli proprietari borghesi, desiderosi di esclusività, non è solo un grave anacronismo dal punto di vista della storia dell’evoluzione, ma ciò porterebbe a trascurare l’inventività e la gran diversità nei modi di abitare, di condividere gli spazi e di stare da soli che si ritrova tra gli esseri territoriali”.
La conferenza affronta in particolare le ricerche condotte dagli ornitologi sugli uccelli. Perché proprio gli uccelli? “Perché sono i primi ad aver suscitato la curiosità degli osservatori, dilettanti o scienziati, sulla questione dei territori. In seguito, con l’avanzare delle ricerche, sono apparsi modi di organizzazione sempre più complessi. I territori diventano luoghi di performance artistiche, di forme inventive di socializzazione, emergono questioni di composizione e di partizione. E il lavoro dei ricercatori, da allora, non è più quello di cercare una teoria o una spiegazione, ma di rendere onore a tali modi di organizzare la vita insieme”.

One of the most prominent contemporary thinkers, the Belgian philosopher and psychologist Vinciane Despret presents her most recent research for the first time in Italy, only a few days after the publication of her latest book,Habiter en oiseau (Actes Sud).
Linked to authors such as Isabelle Stengers and Bruno Latour, Despret has focused her analysis on the relationship with science, on the animal world and the relationship between human psychology and ethology, through which she explores “the political consequences of our theoretical choices”.
During COMP(H)OST, she presents her most recent research on the subject of the territory. As she herself explains: “In many texts we find the idea that we humans are ‘instinctively territorial’. Could this instinct, inherited from our animal ancestors, explain our idea of private property, territory, frontier and lastly of nation? This would mean forgetting that these concepts are recent and historically positioned. Making animals into small bourgeois owners, eager for exclusivity, is not only a serious anachronism from the point of view of the history of evolution, but it also means neglecting the inventiveness and the great diversity in the ways of living, of sharing spaces and of being alone that is found among territorial beings”.
In particular her speech looks at the many research conducted by ornithologists regarding birds. Why birds? “Because they are the first to have aroused the curiosity of observers, both amateurs and scientists, on the question of territories. Then, during these researches, increasingly complex ways of organization were discovered. The territories become places of artistic performance, of inventive forms of socialization; issues of composition and partition emerge. And the work of researchers, since then, has no longer been to seek a theory or an explanation, but to honor these ways of organizing life together”.
